Octopus (octopus spp)
Spread across 300 different species the Octopus is a soft limbed mollusc which has eight limbs to use. It is a bilaterally symmetrical animal and has two eyes and a beak. Thanks to its soft body the octopus can change shape and move around in between nooks and corners too. When they move around the eight appendages tend to follow them.
It is said that an Octopus has a complex nervous system but obviously good eyesight and thus are the most behaviourally diverse of all invertebrates. You will find an octopus in various parts of the sea like pelagic waters, coral reefs and the sea beds. Most of the species of octopus grow very quickly leading to early maturity and subsequent death.
Octopus has been aptly used in various forms of mythology and certain fantasy books as well. The entire world loves to eat the octopus but usually, the Mediterranean and Asian areas are true lovers of the same. Giant Pacific octopus has been found to be the largest of the entire octopus available. On the other hand, the Octopus wolfi is smallest with an average length of 2.5 centimetres. It also has an ink sac for protection which can be found under its digestive gland.

Squid- White (Loligo Duvauceli)
Cephalopods by origin Squids have large eyes, elongated bodies, two tentacles and eight arms. Similar to other counterparts they have a mantle, distinct head and bilateral symmetry. Just like an octopus, they have a very soft body but it has a small skeleton which is shaped like a pen. They use their two tentacles to grab the prey and the eight arms to hold it tight.
The beak they have is used to cut the prey into pieces and swallow it. They usually locate their prey and then by jet propulsion move very quickly to reach and attack it. Surprisingly squids are considered to be the most intelligent of all the invertebrates found on earth. Squids can also camouflage and escape from predators. They are bioluminescent and use the light also for camouflage.
In commercial fisheries found in Japan, the Mediterranean, the south-western Atlantic, the eastern Pacific the squid are nurtured for consumption. Also called Calamari you would find them being used as a popular food item in many parts of the world. Squids are also a popular presence in many mythical tales and literature across the world. They can also use ink present in their bodies to distract any kind of predators trying to attack them.
The giant tiger prawn is a crustacean that is actively reared for food purposes. Initially, the species was first discovered in the year 1798. The females of the species reach a length of 33 cm and their weight is around 200-320 grams. On the other hand, the males have a length of 20-25 cm and their weight can be near to 100-170 grams. The carapace and abdomen of both are banded with red and white stripes.
Naturally, the Tiger prawn is found in the Indo pacific region. This goes from the eastern coast of Africa and the Arabian Peninsula to Southeast Asia, the Pacific Ocean, and northern Australia. They can be seen in the Gulf of Mexico too. Their first capturing happened in 1988 when nearly 300 of them were held from the South Eastern shore. Now they can be caught in the waters ranging from Texas to North Carolina.
The Tiger prawn can stay in different types of settings but when they grow up you can find them in estuaries and mangroves only. Black tiger prawn variety is said to be nocturnal. In the day they burrow into the substrates and in the night they look out for food. Mating also happens in night and they produce around 8 lakh eggs.
Found in the eastern Pacific Ocean the White leg shrimp as it is also known as is farmed for food on a regular basis. In some places, people also refer to it as the King prawn or the Pacific White Shrimp. On the outset, the Vannamei Shrimp can grow to a total length of 230 mm. The length of its carapace only grows to 90 mm.
The adult white leg shrimps are found in the sea at a depth of around 72 metres and the young ones can be seen thronging the estuaries. Its rostrum is moderately long and has 7-10 feet on the dorsal side while it has two to four teeth on the ventral side. The white leg shrimp is mostly found in temperatures above the level of 20 degrees.
In the 20th century, this species was very crucial for the fisherman of this region. However, by the end of the decade fisheries became overcome by aquaculture. In fact, in El Nino years the temperature rose and the population of the Vannamei Shrimp declined and vice versa. 9 years back Greenpeace foundation added the same to the seafood red list. This includes species which are easily sold in fisheries and can be easily sourced from unsustainable fisheries. In the year 2016, its global production was 55% of crustaceanâ??s production worldwide.
Red Tiny Shrimp (Metapenaeus Hardwickii)
The red tiny shrimp is very small in size with its length barely crossing 1.5 cm. It is usually found in brackish waters near the sea coast. Mostly you will find it in very large numbers and is found endemically in the Hawaiian Islands. In five of the eight islands of Hawaii, the shrimp is found. They are known to be both herbivorous and detritivorous which is a very surprising fact.
Red shrimps diet includes algal and bacterial mats which are found on rocks surface. The reproduction process of the same happens in the subterranean area of their habitat. Red shrimp is one of the longest living creatures in their category and some can even survive for 20 years at a stretch.
It is quite difficult to demarcate a male red shrimp from a female one. However, the female carries clusters of red/maroon eggs under their pleopods and that can be a distinguishing factor. At times they may mot their shells which are seen as shells down the tank or wherever they are stored. It is said that red shrimps mate after moulting though there is no evidence to prove that. In conditions that they are stressed the red tiny shrimp would want to hide.

Poovalan shrimp are found in the coastal regions of India and in some other countries like Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Philippines, and New Guinea. In India, the major states where its nurturing is done are south-east coast-Orissa, Kakinada, Visakhapatnam, Tamil Nadu and Union territory of Puducherry and in the Southwest coast-Kerala, Goa and Karnataka.
The total length of female species is around 36-130 mm and that for males is around 41-120 mm. The average sex ratio, in this case, is around 1:1.5 (M: F). In five monthsâ?? time, the maturity size of around 69 mm is achieved. At the Chennai fisheries harbour, the Poovalan shrimp holds the most important position in terms of average consumption.
In the areas between Ongole in south Andhra Pradesh and Nagapattinam to the south of Chennai, the Poovalan shrimp is believed to be fished from a depth of anywhere between 5-60 metres. The normal style to capture the same is using a trawl as that yields the best results possible. In Vishakhapatnam, it is found that both the fisheries of the east and west coast contribute their share and increase the potential growth of the variety.
Bamboo Shrimp (Penaeus Japonicus)
Bamboo shrimps are found abundantly in Malaysia and Indo Pacific regions. Usually, they occupy spaces in large groups and can be seen in slow rivers and streams feeding on small organisms. By nature, the bamboo shrimp is very calm which makes it easy to adjust in the tanks with other fishes and species.
Very often the bamboo shrimp is sold under different names and that is because of the variety in its looks. An adult bamboo shrimpâ??s height can be around 4 inches. Depending on the conditions in which they are living the bamboo shrimps stay alive for two to three years at the maximum. It is very unfortunate that the bamboo shrimps die if they are moved to any other tank. This happens because of the stress they face when they are moved around.
A bamboo shrimp is usually seen in brown, red, green or yellowish shades. The colour of the shrimp is largely dependent upon the place from where it was caught, variety in its diet, tank plants in the tank and the shedding process of the shrimps. Therefore you cannot predict what colour the shrimp would show when it shifts tanks. The fan-shaped leg it has helps it to capture small organisms and plant remnants.
