In hot concentrated sulfuric acid, it releases oxygen and forms manganese(II) sulfate. In hydrochloric acid, it releases chlorine and forms manganese(II) chloride. When fused with caustic alkalis and oxidizing agents, it releases carbon dioxide and forms permanganates.
