In antiquity, bay leaves or laurel was widely revered. It was considered to be the plant of the god Apollo, portrayed as a young man with wavy hair adorned with a laurel wreath. The legends state that Apollo, god of the sun, fell in love with the nymph Daphne, who was changed into a laurel tree. Pythia, the oracle at Delphi spoke her prophecies apparently because she chewed laurel leaves and sat on a three-legged stool shrouded in laurel. Young doctors in the Middle Ages, upon successfully finishing their studies received laurel wreaths. They called themselves "Bocca laureati" which in time became "baccalaureate", or bachelor. Poets, artists and prophets were decorated with laurel wreaths and addressed with the honorific laureate, a term still used today.

Premium Bay Leaves Aromatic & Versatile!

Bay leaf, also known as Tej Patta or Laurel leaf, is a fragrant leaf from the Laurus nobilis tree, native to the Mediterranean region. Known for its distinct herbal aroma and slightly bitter, peppery flavor, bay leaf is widely used as a flavoring agent in global cuisines.

Bay leaves are typically added whole to soups, stews, biryanis, curries, and sauces during cooking and removed before serving. When dried, they develop a sharper aroma and are more commonly used than fresh leaves in culinary applications.

Beyond cooking, bay leaves are also valued in traditional medicine for their digestive, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial properties.

Bay leaves were used for flavoring by the ancient Greeks. They are a fixture in the cooking of many European cuisines (particularly those of the Mediterranean), as well as in the Americas. They are used in soups, stews, meat, seafood, vegetable dishes, and sauces. The leaves also flavor many classic French dishes. The leaves are most often used whole (sometimes in a bouquet gami) and removed before serving (they can be abrasive in the digestive tract). Thai cuisine employs bay leaf (Thai name bai kra wan) in a few Arab-influenced dishes, notably massaman curry.
