Betel nut is the seed of the fruit of the areca palm. It is also known as areca nut. It is mainly used for chewing with betel leaf in almost all South Asian Countries and in many South East Asian and Oceanic countries.
Betel Nut is available in dried, cured, and fresh forms. When the husk of the fresh fruit is green, the nut inside is soft enough to be cut with a typical knife. In the ripe fruit, the husk becomes yellow or orange, and as it dries, the fruit inside hardens to a wood-like consistency. At that stage, the areca nut can only be sliced using a special scissors-like cutter. The major alkaloid in betel nut is Arecoline. Besides, there are other compounds such as Arecaidine, Guvacine, Isoguvacine, guvacoline, Arecolidine and Homoarecoline.
Betel nut is a nut that comes from a plant called Areca. It is sometimes used to make medicine. Betel nut is chewed alone or in the form of quids, a mixture of tobacco, powdered or sliced betel nut, and other ingredients.
Betel nut is used for schizophrenia, a group of eye disorders that can lead to vision loss (glaucoma), poor digestion, and many other conditions, but there is no good scientific evidence to support these uses. Using betel nuts might also be unsafe.
Some people use betel nut as a recreational drug because it speeds up the central nervous system (CNS).
The seed is separated from the outer layer of the fruit and may be used fresh, dried, boiled, baked, roasted or cured. The most common method of using betel nut is to slice it into thin strips and roll it in a betel leaf with slaked lime (powder) or crushed seashells. This leaf package is known as a betel quid, betel nut chew, betel chew, betel pan or betel paan (India).
Tannin in Areca nuts is mainly used to dyeing clothes and roaps. And also Areca tannin is identified as a safe food coloring agent in food industry.
