A member of the brassica family, but more well known for its distinctive fields of vivid yellow throughout Spring, Canola is grown in many states, but mostly in those with a reasonable rainfall average. Produced for its seed, canola is used primarily for oil which is created by crushing the seed for use for cooking and edible oil blends; canola oil byproducts can then be used as a high protein feed-stock. Nzac Foods have an excellent working relationship with a range of canola growers across Western Australia, Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia, resulting in a quality commodity that can be bulk handled, stored and transported using rigorous quality control systems to ensure the best possible canola product reaches your food processing or commercial premises.

INTRODUCTION In Pakistan after cotton, rapeseed-mustard is the second most important source of oil in Pakistan. It is cultivated over an area of 307,000 hectares with annual production of 233,000 tonnes and contribute about 17% to the domestic production of edible oil. Rapeseed and mustard seed is a rich source of oil and protein. The seed has oil as high as 46-48 percent, Whole seed meal has 43.6 percent protein. Rapeseed meal is an excellent feed for animals. Canola: Canola is different from rapeseed and it is lower in erucic acid and glucosinolates, which are anti-nutritive and health. Canola type varieties are free of these elements. PRODUCTION TECHNOLOGY Climate: Rapeseed is well adapted in temperate region and requires cool temperature for vegetative and reproductive growth. The growth cycle of rapeseed may be as short as 70 days or long as 380 days. Rapeseed and Mustard grow best under relatively cool temperatures upto flowering. After flowering they can tolerate high temperature, however, more heat and drought stress may result in a reduction of seed size, crop yield and oil contents. Among rape and mustard crops, sarson is the most susceptible to frost injury whereas, raya and taramira are more tolerant to extreme weather condition. Soil: Rapeseed-mustard can be grown on a wide range of soils including both light and heavy type. Crop can tolerate a variable range of pH from 5.5 to 8.0. However, the most suitable soils are those that are: Deep and free from hardpan, allow good taproot development, uniformly textured, allow even establishment. Unlikely to crust after rain, so that the seedling can emerge easily. Not prompt to water logging, rapeseed will tolerate winter waterlogging.

Rapeseeds Brassica napus Linnaeus - known as rapeseed and in certain cultivars, Canola-is a bright yellow flowering member of the Brassicacea family (mustard or cabbage family). It is a mustard crop grown primarily for its seed which yields about forty percent oil and a high-protein animal feed. Moisture: max. 8.0% Oil content: min 42% Admixture: max 2.0% Eruc acid: max. 2.0% Glucosinolates: max. 35mol/gr Rape seed oil was produced in the 19th century as a source of a lubricant for steam engines. It was less useful as food for animals or humans because it has a bitter taste due to high levels of glucosinates. Varieties have now been bred to reduce the content of glucosinolates, yielding more palatable oil. This has had the side effect that the oil contains much less erucic acid.Canola oil comes from rapeseed. Rapeseeds grow into important oil plants in China, Canada, India,France & some other European Countries. Rapeseed, also called colza, is a member of the Cruciferae family and grows to a height of 75-175 cm. It has yellow flowers, blue-green leaves and is heavily branched with deep, fibrous taproot. The seeds are small, round and black-red in colour. As the oil content of rapeseed is around 43 %, the processing is usually made in two steps: pre-pressing plus solvent extraction. Sometimes only deep-pressing is applied.
