It is commonly used in the manufacture of synthetic detergents, water treatment, and other sectors such as ceramics, food and beverage, paint and varnish, etc. It is a white molecular mineral and is used as a binder, stabilizer and sequestrant. We get our STPP mineral from several regions of Rajasthan in India.

STPP has several applications in the food and beverage industry. Cake mixtures, meringues, juices, hams, peas, lima beans, cured pork, sausages, and algin sweets all contain this ingredient. Within the ceramic and enamel industry, STPP mineral is used to achieve a fluid paste or a well-dispersed solution which further optimizes the manufacturing process.

1.In detergents

The majority of STPP is consumed as a component of commercial detergents. It serves as a "builder," industrial jargon for a water softener. In hard water (water that contains high concentrations of Mg2+ and Ca2+), detergents are deactivated. Being a highly charged chelating agent, TPP5- binds to dictations tightly and prevents them from interfering with the sulfonate detergent.

2.Food Applications

STPP is a preservative for seafood, meats, poultry, and animal feeds. It is common in food production as E number E451. In foods, STPP is used as an emulsifier and to retain moisture. Many governments regulate the quantities allowed in foods, as it can substantially increase the sale weight of seafood in particular. The United States Food and Drug Administration lists STPP as "generally recognized as safe.".

3.Other Uses

Other uses (hundreds of thousands of tons/years) include "ceramics, leather tanning (as masking agent and synthetic tanning agent - SYNTAN), anticaking, setting retarders, flame retardants, paper, anticorrosion pigments, textiles, rubber manufacture, fermentation, antifreeze.

Properties:

White powder; Melting point 622ºC; Easily soluble in water; It has got salient chelating capacity to ions of Ca and Mg etc. And can soften hard water to make suspension solution become into clear solution; It has got weak alkalinity but no corrosiveness. It is a surfactant, and has got outstanding emulsification to lubricants and fat. It has different bulk density, I. E. Low density 0.35-0.5g/cm3, medium density 0.51-0.65g/cm3 and high density 0.66-0.9g/cm3. This product has two crystalline forms, namely Type I (high temperature type) and Type II (low temperature type). The chemical properties of the two types are the same, and the difference between them lies in the thermo stability, hygroscopic, solubility and hydration heat when dissolving.

Uses:
