1. Rubber Sealing Materials
1) Nitrile rubber (NBR)
- Excellent oil resistance, suitable for conventional hydraulic oil environments, with a working temperature range of -40 â?? to+120 â??.
- Mainly used in static sealing scenarios, such as O-rings and some combination seals
2) Fluororubber (FKM)
- High temperature resistance (up to 200 â??), chemical corrosion resistance, suitable for hydraulic oil containing phosphate esters or highly corrosive media.
- Commonly used in high-pressure systems or extreme temperature environments.
3) Silicone rubber (VMQ)
- Outstanding cold resistance (-70 â?? to+200 â??), but low mechanical strength, only suitable for static sealing
2. Polymer Sealing Materials
1) Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)
- Extremely low friction coefficient, good self-lubricating properties, strong corrosion resistance, suitable for high-speed or chemically corrosive environments.
- Often used as a filling material in conjunction with rubber, or in combination with seals (such as Glay rings, seals).
2) Polyurethane (PU)
- High wear resistance and anti extrusion strength, suitable for high-pressure reciprocating motion seals (such as Y-shaped rings, U-shaped rings), working temperature -30 â?? to+100 â??.
3) Nylon (PA)
- Oil resistant and wear-resistant, used for non direct sealing components such as guide rings and support rings, with a working temperature of -40 â?? to+120 â??.
3. Metal Sealing Materials
Stainless steel/copper alloy
- Used for extreme high pressure (>32MPa) or high temperature (>450 â??) scenarios, achieving metal to metal sealing through precision machining.
4. Composite Sealing Materials
Clip on rubber+rubber (lace ring) or PTFE+rubber (Glay ring/Steller seal)
- Combining the elasticity of rubber with the wear resistance of PTFE/sandwich material, suitable for high-pressure dynamic sealing (such as valve spool and valve cage).
Selection Suggestions
- Normal working conditions: Priority should be given to using nitrile rubber or polyurethane.
- High temperature/corrosive environment: Fluorine rubber or PTFE composite materials are better.
- Ultra high pressure scenario: requires metal seals or combined sealing structures.

Component mechanical seals are composed of separate rotary and stationary parts. Unlike cartridge seals, component seals are not pre-assembled and require skilled technicians to install them. Incorrect installation of seal faces, O-rings, and seal axial setting on the pump shaft will result in reduced seal life or in some cases, immediate seal failure.

Disadvantages of Component Mechanical Seals
The major disadvantage for component mechanical seals are their susceptibility to damage. Component mechanical seals usually have exposed parts that are more susceptible to damage during transportation or installation.
Further, component seals require precise measurements during installation to prevent seal failure. Properly installing this type of seal requires more operator time and thus a higher cost to install or re-install after a repair.

Cartridge mechanical seal is a collection of all the parts of the mechanical seal, such as the rotary ring, stationary ring, spring, secondary seal, gland, etc. The rotating and stationary parts of this seal are pre-assembled into a whole before installation. After inspection and pressure test, they are installed in the seal cavity, fixed to the pump shaft with set screws, tighten the seal gland bolts, remove the assembly positioning plate, and the mechanical seal can be in a parallel working state and put into operation. This is not only easy to assemble but also ensures the assembly quality.
Advantages of Cartridge Mechanical Seals
1. All parts of the seal are assembled into a whole, with a compact structure.
2. The seal is pre-assembled into a whole, which ensures the working height of the spring, is conducive to the operation of the seal under the designed working conditions, and it is safer. It eliminates measurement errors and improves the reliability of the seal.
3. The seal is easy and quick to install on site, without the need for on-site debugging (such as springs, sealing surfaces, etc.), which reduces the labor intensity of maintenance workers. It reduces installation human errors and reduces the occurrence of failures.

Disadvantages of Cartridge Mechanical Seals
The disadvantage of the cartridge mechanical seal is the higher initial cost and the additional required space.
