Propylene for PP Plastic
Propylene is a colorless gas with a slightly sweet odor and the chemical formula Câ??Hâ??. It has a faint petroleum-like scent and is flammable.
Physical properties: It has a boiling point of approximately -47.6°C, is slightly heavier than air, is sparingly soluble in water, and is readily soluble in organic solvents.
Propylene is primarily sourced from processes such as catalytic cracking in petroleum refining, co-production during steam cracking for ethylene, and propane dehydrogenation (PDH).
Propylene is a vital basic organic chemical raw material; approximately 70% of it is used to produce polypropylene (PP plastic).
Its primary application is conversion into the "versatile plastic" known as polypropylene (PP).
Polypropylene is a general-purpose plastic with excellent performance characteristics:
Packaging: Used to manufacture food packaging bags, plastic films, woven bags, etc.
Consumer and industrial goods: Used for appliance housings, automotive bumpers and interior components, medical devices, pipelines, etc.
Fiber products: Processed into polypropylene fibers for use in clothing, carpets, and anti-cracking materials for concrete.
Approximately 30% of propylene undergoes various chemical reactions to produce other key industrial raw materials:
Propylene oxide (PO): Primarily used to produce polyurethane (PU) foamâ??a core material for upholstered furniture, car seats, and building insulationâ??as well as antifreeze and coatings.
Acrylonitrile (ACN): A raw material for acrylic fiber (synthetic wool); also used to manufacture ABS resin (a high-strength engineering plastic for appliances and automotive parts) and carbon fiber (for aerospace and high-end sports equipment).
Acrylic acid: Used to produce superabsorbent polymers (SAP)â??the core absorbent material in diapers and sanitary padsâ??as well as coatings and adhesives.
Cumene: Can be further converted into phenol and acetone; it serves as a key intermediate for manufacturing phenolic resins, bisphenol A (a raw material for polycarbonate/PC plastic), and various solvents.
Butanol/Octanol: Primarily used to produce plasticizers and acrylates, which are widely applied in coatings, adhesives, and plastics processing.
