The structure of LiCoO2 has been studied by X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy and neutron powder diffraction. The lithium atomic layer lies between plates of regular octahedrons formed by cobalt and oxygen atoms (shown below). This structure is in agreement with the structure predicted by the theory. Lithium cobalt oxide is toxic and should be handled safely.
