Found in the eastern Pacific Ocean the White leg shrimp as it is also known as is farmed for food on a regular basis. In some places, people also refer to it as the King prawn or the Pacific White Shrimp. On the outset, the Vannamei Shrimp can grow to a total length of 230 mm. The length of its carapace only grows to 90 mm.

The adult white leg shrimps are found in the sea at a depth of around 72 metres and the young ones can be seen thronging the estuaries. Its rostrum is moderately long and has 7-10 feet on the dorsal side while it has two to four teeth on the ventral side. The white leg shrimp is mostly found in temperatures above the level of 20 degrees.

In the 20th century, this species was very crucial for the fisherman of this region. However, by the end of the decade fisheries became overcome by aquaculture. In fact, in El Nino years the temperature rose and the population of the Vannamei Shrimp declined and vice versa. 9 years back Greenpeace foundation added the same to the seafood red list. This includes species which are easily sold in fisheries and can be easily sourced from unsustainable fisheries. In the year 2016, its global production was 55% of crustaceanâ??s production worldwide.

Red Shrimp (Aristeus Alcocki)
Also going by the name Arabian Red Shrimp this variety of prawns is mostly found in the Indian Ocean. It can mostly be found in extreme depths of around 270-1086 metres. The maximum length that the Red Shrimp achieves is around 15 centimetres though there is no clue about its average height or any other important detail.

The common length of the male species of red shrimp is 11 centimetre while that of his female counterpart is 14 centimetre. Members of this species of prawns are considered to be gonochoric by nature. In order to mate they indulge in a precopulatory courtship ritual. After the ritual is over an indirect transfer of sperm happens from the male to the female.

Overall there is no such indication that the red shrimp is dangerous or is moving on the path to extinction. The fact that it is mostly found in the Indian Ocean strengthens the belief that it might soon become rare. However, because they are found in fewer numbers the price of one piece tends to be very high. The taste of the red shrimp is good and hence many people long to purchase them for consumption.

Karikadi (Parapenaeopsis Stylifera)
The Karikadi is a shrimp variety seen in regions of the Indian Ocean. They can be seen in the waters of Kuwait, Pakistan and Bangladesh. In fact, it has two subspecies and each is found in different zones of the Indian Ocean. Maturity length of the Karikadi is around 9 cm though its maximum length can go up to 14.5 cms.

The age of the Karikadi is around 2 years which is pretty early. In coast and depths, the Karikadi is seen at depths of 90 metres. On the other hand in muddy and sandy substrates the fish can be seen at a depth of 50 metres. Karikadi is omnivorous in temperament and its diet in normal situations includes crustaceans, mud and detritus, vegetable matter, gastropods, bivalves, diatoms, and sand particles

As and when the shrimp matures sexually its feeding intensity also increases. The Karikadi takes less than 15 months to double its population and hence it does not fall under the high-risk category at all. Commercially the Karikadi is nurtured in fisheries and it does not pose any kind of threats to any human.
