Unen Choit Coffee Cooperative Society

Introduction

Unen Choit is an organization made up of coffee farmers/growers. It helps its members, the coffee farmers, to access international coffee markets.

Establishment

Unen Choit was registered as a cooperative society in September 2013. But it has its beginnings in the early 1980's as an association of small coffee farmers from the Wawet village in the Tewae-Siassi district of Morobe Province.

Brief history

Early 1980's Unen Group (for coffee) founded by Late Mr. Molock Linding
2008 Formalizing group as Unen Choit (Wawet villagers in Tewae-Siassi district)
2010 onward Registering of members began. Members have been registered since from villages in
Tewae-Siassi and Kabwum distrits.
2010 onwards Coffee certification programs.
2011 Registered as a cooperative society: Unen Choit Coffee Growers Cooperative Society Ltd
2013 onwards Dealing with and supporting cocoa farmers.
2013 Certified as NASAA Organic coffee producer.
2014 onwards Accumulating fixed assets and further expansion.
2015 Certified as Fairtrade coffee producer.
2016 Major restructuring of organization.
2017 Started roasting coffee. Two brands created.
2022-2023 Decertification from Fairtrade and NASAA Organic programs.
2023-Current Operating without certification. And work in progress to get re-certified under the
Fairtrade and NASAA Organic programs.
