Copra meal or coconut meal is the by product of the oil extraction from dried coconut kernels (copra) that is subsequently dried and crushed into powder or chips. This product is widely used in the animal feeds industry and is commonly consumed by animals such as hogs and cattle since it contains a high percentage of crude protein and crude fiber. It has a sweet coconut aroma and is brown in color. Copra meal is produced in the extraction of oil from coconuts. The coconut is manually harvested, the outer husk removed, and the white copra cut from within the shell. The copra is dried by direct or indirect drying. When the copra is dry, the oil is mechanical or solvent (hexane) extracted to yeild 30% copra meal. The residual meal is called copra cake or copra meal. High quality copra meal contains approx 20% protein, 8-10% oil.
