Bitumen is a heavy, black, sticky, and viscous hydrocarbon material primarily obtained from the crude oil distillation tower at refineries. At ambient temperature, it exists as a solid or semi-solid and becomes liquid when heated. Its key characteristics are excellent adhesion and impermeability to water, making it a critical material in the road construction industry.
Types and Grades of Bitumen
Bitumen can be classified in different ways:
A) Classification Based on Source and Production Method:
Type Description Primary Application
Petroleum Bitumen (Distillation Bitumen) The most common type, obtained from crude oil distillation. Base for asphalt, waterproofing applications
Natural Bitumen (Gilsonite) Found in nature with very high purity. Additive for petroleum bitumen, coloring
Blown (Oxidized) Bitumen Produced by blowing hot air into base bitumen. Higher thermal resistance and flexibility; used in roofing sheets, waterproofing membranes, pipe coatings
B) Classification Based on Penetration Grade (Common Road Bitumen Grading):
This is the most widely used method for grading pure road bitumen. Higher penetration numbers indicate softer bitumen.
Grade Features Typical Use
60-70 Most common grade in Iran and temperate regions. Asphalt paving
85-100 Used in cold regions. Asphalt paving
40-50 Suitable for very hot climates and heavy traffic loads. Asphalt paving
Main Applications:
Road Construction (~85% of consumption):
Asphalt production for roads, airports, and parking areas.
Waterproofing:
Production of bitumen sheets and membranes for roofs and swimming pools.
Foundation and basement wall insulation.
Related Industries:
Mastics and sealants.
Protective coating for steel pipelines.
Base layer in warehouse flooring.
Example Grade: 100/200 (Penetration System)
The name derives from its penetration range, meaning a standard needle penetrates 10â??20 mm (100â??200 tenths of a millimeter) into the sample within 5 seconds at 25°C under laboratory conditions.
Supply Capacity:
Continuous supply is available for quantities of 10,000 tons and above.
The term bitumen refers to a substance produced through the distillation of crude oil Bitumen is known for its waterproofing and adhesive properties and is commonly used in the construction industry notably for roads and highways The two Bitumen grades are 6070 and 80100 The difference between 6070 and 80100 penetration grade is the penetration range Bitumen 6070 has lower penetration which means it is harder than bitumen 80100 Bitumen 6070 is better suited for use in hot climates and can withstand heavy traffic loads unlike bitumen 80100 According to the ASTM D36 method the softening point of bitumen 6070 is between 49 to 56C and the flash point of bitumen 6070 is 250 C Another important factor is density Due to the ASTM D70 the density of bitumen 6070 is equal to 10344 Bitumen Penetration Grade 85100 is a standard penetration grade Bitumen usually used as a Paving Grade Bitumen suitable for road construction and for the production of asphalt pavements with superior properties This grade of Bitumen is mainly used in the manufacture of hot mix asphalt for bases and wearing courses
Product Description :
Bitumen is widely used in the construction of asphalt roads and bituminous membrane products. Bitumen is commonly used to build highways, motorways and rail networks. Bitumen has excellent water-proofing properties and is widely used for making roofing products along with a range of other household and industrial applications, from emulsion paints to sound-proofing. Penetration Bitumen and Bitumen Emulsions are used for the construction of railway tracks and by using special types of bitumen such as Polymer Modified Bitumen, the vibration and noise levels are reduced due to a dampening effect. Bitumen has been proven to be effective on both high-speed railway tracks and heavy load railway tracks. Bitumen is also used for surfacing airfield runways and air strips (PMB is preffered due to its fuel resistant properties) and taxi ways. For the Marine construction industry bitumen is used for hydraulic applications such as canal lining, underwater tunnels, river bank protection, dam construction and sea defences. There are also numerous industrial applications like roofing felt material, printing inks, packaging paper, linoleum, electrical cable / Junction box insulation, mastic for roofing of terraces, and duplex paper manufacture.

Coal tar pitch, a kind of artificial pitch, is generally viscous liquid, semi-solid or solid. It is black and shiny. In the process of coal tar processing, the residue after the liquid fraction is removed by distillation is called coal tar pitch. Coal tar pitch is the main component of coal tar, accounting for 50%~60% of the total amount. Generally, it is believed that its main components are polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and their derivatives. The specific composition of the compounds is complex, and the difference of raw coal types and processing technology will also lead to the difference of components, The current method is mainly based on the softening temperature.
Bitumen is a black, semi-solid or liquid substance with high viscosity produced by the non-destructive distillation of crude oil during petroleum refining. The core industry using bitumen is road construction (asphalt) and another significant field is the building industry (roofing membranes, water-proofing felts)
Bitumen 50/70 is a premium-grade asphalt commonly used in road construction, providing excellent adhesion, stability, and durability. With a moderate viscosity, it is ideal for producing high-quality pavements that withstand heavy traffic and extreme weather conditions.
Bitumen 80/100 is a high-quality paving asphalt commonly used in road construction and infrastructure projects. With a balanced viscosity, it provides excellent durability, stability, and resistance to wear and tear, ensuring long-lasting performance in harsh conditions.
Bitumen 60/70 is a high-quality asphalt grade known for its excellent stability and durability in road construction. With optimal viscosity, it is ideal for producing strong, long-lasting pavements that can withstand heavy traffic loads and diverse environmental conditions.
Bitumen a black viscous mixture of hydrocarbons obtained naturally or as a residue from petroleum distillation. It is used for road surfacing and roofing. Bitumen is a mixture of Organic Liquids that are highly Viscous, Black, Sticky, Entirely Soluble in Carbon Disulfide, and composed primarily of highly condensed Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons. Naturally occurring or crude bitumen is a sticky, tar-like form of petroleum which is so thick and heavy that it must be heated or diluted before it will flow. At room temperature, it is much like cold molasses. Refined Bitumen is the residual (bottom) fraction obtained by fractional distillation of crude oil. It is the heaviest fraction and the one with the highest boiling point, boiling at 525 C (977 F).
Petroalliance are involved in import and the supply and trade of Bitumen Oil. This oil is a dark and viscous liquid which is sticky in texture. It is widely used in road construction, waterproofing, paints, enamels etc. It is available to clients in different types of settings at highly affordable prices. It is widely acclaimed amongst our client base for its supreme quality.
Uses of Bitumens
Bitumen is primarily used for construction and paving of roads. Its other uses are for Bituminous Waterproofing Products, including the use of bitumen in the production of roofing felt and for sealing flat roofs.
VG-20 bitumen is a grade of viscosity bitumen used in cold climatic and high altitude regions. This grade of bitumen is suitable for road construction in regions with 30 to 37 C average temperature.
In North India, vg20 is used for road construction in hot mix asphalt. The standard penetration value of bitumen viscosity grade VG-20 is 60 mm at 25 C. The absolute viscosity of VG-20 bitumen is 1600 to 2400 poise at 60 C.
