A flange is a protruded ridge, lip or rim, either external or internal, that serves to increase strength; for easy attachment or transfer of contact force with another object; or for stabilizing and guiding the movements of a machine or its parts.
A flange nut looks like a standard hex nut from one side, but the bottom is widened into a circular flange, creating a bell-like shape. Most of the time manufacturers serrate the bearing surface of flange nuts So that it gives a better grip on the surface of the joint.
