It is obtained from plantage ovate or Psyllium plant. Psyllium plant grow in the region which has good exposure to sunlight, and the soils are well drained and sandy. This is an annual crop cultivated largely in India. Psyllium is mucilage having a combination of xylose, aucubin, galacturonic, arabinose, semi drying fatty oils. It is derived from bent layers extracted from dried ripe seeds of plantago ovata frosk. Psyllium consists of 80% water soluble fiber.
As it is high in soluble fiber, psyllium can help lower cholesterol as well as provide from relief from constipation and diarrhea. Because of the high fiber content, psyllium can also reduce the risk of heart disease. Psyllium husk is also used to increase the fiber content of foods.
