The function of the prosthetic knee is to simulate the flexion and extension (bending and straightening) of the anatomical knee joint during the movement of the amputee. When used in conjunction with a prosthetic foot, the knee supports the amputee while providing a smooth and economical gait.
The amputee relies on the prosthetic knee for stability during ambulation. In order to provide stability, the knee needs to remain stable or locked during walking.
Many variations of the basic joint have been designed; from a simple hinge to a self-aware, computer-controlled knee. Clinical prosthetists are trained to understand the different types of knees. Their expertise is critical in assisting amputees and their caregivers in deciding which knee will maximize the amputee's potential.
The main function of prosthetic knee is to help the amputee to simulate the bending and extension of the knee joint when moving. At the same time, when the prosthetic foot is used in conjunction, the knee plays a role to achieve a smooth and relaxed gait.
Prosthetic Pneumatic Knee Joint
This multi-centered prosthetic knee joint with pneumatic swing phase control provides reliable standing phase safety for users with moderate activity levels.
The smooth and powerful single-chamber pneumatics (each chamber for flexion and extension damping) does not run out of air during the swing phase, even at different walking speeds. Smooth flexion and extension movements can be achieved, resulting in an approximation of the physiological gait pattern. The joint geometry here effectively shortens the prosthesis during oscillation, thereby increasing ground clearance.
Four-bar pneumatic knee joint is made of aviation grade ultra-light, super-hard magnesium alloy material, with beautiful appearance. The weight was 0.95kg, the maximum load was 125kg, and the knee flexion was 150 degrees.
