Bentonite is an absorbent aluminium phyllosilicate clay consisting mostly of montmorillonite. It was named by Wilbur C. Knight in 1898 after the Cretaceous Benton Shale near Rock River, Wyoming.
The different types of bentonite are each named after the respective dominant element, such as potassium (K), sodium (Na), calcium (Ca), and aluminium (Al). Experts debate a number of nomenclatorial problems with the classification of bentonite clays. Bentonite usually forms from weathering of volcanic ash, most often in the presence of water. However, the term bentonite, as well as a similar clay called tonstein, has been used to describe clay beds of uncertain origin. For industrial purposes, two main classes of bentonite exist: sodium and calcium bentonite. In stratigraphy and tephrochronology, completely devitrified (weathered volcanic glass) ash-fall beds are commonly referred to as K-bentonites when the dominant clay species is illite. In addition to montmorillonite and illite anther common clay species that is sometimes dominant is kaolinite. Kaolinite-dominated clays are commonly referred to as tonsteins and are typically associated withcoal.

Bentonite is a highly colloidal clay mineral which gets its name from the place where its presence and usages were first discovered - Fort Benton, America. The multiple properties of bentonite namely hydration, swelling, water absorption, viscosity, thixotropy make it a multi-application product for diverse industries.
Primarily two varieties of bentonite are available - sodium bentonite (high swelling, gelling and thermal durability) and calcium bentonite (more commonly available worldwide but with less swelling).
Bentonite has high swelling properties along with good viscosity and liquid limit. These properties are highly valued in most of the industrial applications. Sodium bentonite is well suited as a binder in the preparation of pellets, and in foundry and oil - well drilling mudSodium-based bentonite of 75 mm size finds suitability in iron ore pelletisation for bonding by user industries. Bentonite has also remarkable colloidal and waterproofing properties.
Chemical formula :- Al2H2Na2O13Si4
Application :
Bentonite is also used in chemical, rubber, insecticide & pesticide industries and in civil construction works.
Bentonite in the form of fine powder free from dirt and other foreign matter and of least swelling property is used in ceramic industry.
Bentonite is native colloidal hydrated aluminium silicate consisting mainly of montmorillonite. Bentonite is typically included in formulas because of its absorbency. The clay consists of very tiny flakes with small amounts of space in between. These small spaces readily accept fluids. Once the clay has pulled these liquids into the spaces, it retains them. This property makes it very useful for absorbing oil from the complexion.
Sodium Bentonite is widely used in Civil engineering works such as bore piling, water well drilling, HDD, tunneling and others.
Sodium Bentonite is mixed with water to provide strength inside the bore hole while drilling is ongoing. By using sodium bentonite, the bore hole will not collapse and the drill bits are lubricated.
CLAYMINTON 54 Traditional Organoclay (Rheological additive)
CLAYMINTON 54 is one traditional organoclay which is modified with fine Bentonite and special chemicals. It is designed for medium to low polarity solvent based system. It is particularly suitable for coatings, inks, adhesives. CLAYMINTON 54performs outstanding thickening, anti-settling property, sag control and storage stability.
Advantages and Features
CLAYMINTON 54presents excellent thickening and dispersibility with good KU and Brookfield viscosities building.
