Shea butter is a vegetable fat extracted from the sun-dried kernels of the Shea tree (Vitellaria Paradoxa). The tree is indigenous to Africa and Unrefined Shea butter is rich in vitamins A, E, oleic acid, and sterols, and hence a great natural ingredient for cosmetics formulations due to its emollient properties, particularly its ability to soften the skin along with dry areas.
For over decades, shea butter has been exported to Europe and used as an ingredient in chocolate and as a substitute for cocoa butter. Both shea and cocoa butters are added to candies for texture and as stabilizers. However, shea butter's current popularity and recognition is due to its moisturizing qualities and its use in high-quality cosmetics and in hair and skin care products. These uses make shea butter one of the few cash crops sold from the African region. The processing of shea nuts into butter is done traditionally and industrially.

Shea butter is a fat extracted from the nut of the African shea tree (Vitellaria paradoxa).
Widely used in cosmetics production as a moisturiser, salve or lotion. Shea butter is edible and is used in food preparation as well .
Shea butter is mainly used in the cosmetics industry for skin- and hair-products production (lip gloss, lip stick, skin moisturisers and emulsions. It is also used by soap makers and massage oil manufacturers.

The oil content is the most crucial element of the shea nut as that component is an important ingredient in the composition of the butter that goes into Cocoa Butter Equivalents and other by-products.
If the oil content is higher and the FFA and moisture content is lower, then the exporter will receive a price premium.
