Inconel 617 is a mixture of nickel, chromium, cobalt and molybdenum, high levels of nickel (44.5% minimum) and chromium (20-24%) give this alloy good resistance to reducing and oxidizing media. Cobalt (10-15%) and molybdenum (8-10%) combine to strengthen the solid solution. A small amount of aluminum (0.8-1.5%) is also included and works with chromium to provide good resistance to oxidation at high temperatures. One of the alloy's key properties is that it maintains high levels of strength even at elevated temperatures without compromising its corrosion resistance. The material is also very functional, as it can be easily formed and welded using traditional techniques.
