The fruit is usually consumed fresh or in a preserved form, such as dried or as a paste. Turkey is the major producer of dried figs, followed by Iran, USA, Greece, Spain and Italy.
Per serving, dates provide slightly more carbs and less fat than figs. Both are an excellent source of dietary fiber and other important nutrients, such as potassium and magnesium.
Fresh figs are dried under the sun, on the nets. It takes about 7-8 days to get the desired dryness level. After sun drying, figs are transported in food grade crates, from farms to factory for further processing. Figs are a good source of both calcium and potassium. These minerals can work together to improve bone density, which can, in turn, prevent conditions like osteoporosis. Studies suggest that a potassium-rich diet, in particular, can improve bone health.
