This is an internal combustion engine. The vaporized fuel is mixed with air in carburettor. This mixture’s sucked by engine (Intake stroke - 1st stroke) through inlet valve which opens. The descending piston draws fresh petrol and air mixture into the cylinder. This mixture is compressed (Compression strokes 2nd stroke). During compression the mixture gets heated and ignition burns the fuel converting into a large volume of gas which pushes the piston. while the valves are closed the piston is pushed to the bottom of the cylinder by the gases of combustion (Power Stroke 3rd stroke) The exhaust valve opens due to momentum gained by wheels piston is pushed upwards and burnt gases are expelled (Exhaust stroke - 4th stroke).

Petrol is mixed with air in a device called carburettor to form a combustible mixture which is compressed in a cylinder and finally ignited by an electric spark produced between the electrodes of a sparking plug. The gases which are formed in the cylinder by the combustion of air petrol mixture, expand, and thrust the piston downward. Acting through the connecting rod, the piston imparts a rotary motion the crankshaft. The energy to remove spent gases from the cylinder is provided by the flywheel thus paving the way for injection of fresh air petrol mixture, so that a new cycle can begin

A steam engine utilises the energy contained in steam under high pressure. The energy that is released when steam expands is made to produce rotary motion which can be used for driving the machinery. The seam form boiler is admitted into the cylinder having a piston , when the steam expands, it causes the piston to move, when the piston has travelled to the end of the cylinder and thus completed the stroke, the expanded steam is allowed to escape form cylinder. At the same time the path of the steam is changed over. i.e. live steam under pressure is admitted to the other side of piston causing the later to travel back past its starting point until it has reached the other end of stroke. A steam engine of this type is called double acting because force of steam is applied alternatively on two sides of piston.
