Galangal

Galangal,[3] gadamala,[4] laos[5] or kelawas (Karo language) (Alpinia galanga) is a type of tuber plant that can grow in both highland and lowland areas. Galangal is a type of spice widely grown in Asia, such as India, Arabia, China, Sri Lanka, and Indonesia.[6] People generally use it as a cooking spice and in traditional medicine. Galangal is used in cooking by bruising the rhizome and then dipping it into the cooking mixture, while red galangal is often used in traditional medicine.

Galangal can grow in open areas; in full sun or with some shade. Galangal can grow well in moist, loose soil and will have difficulty growing in muddy soil. Galangal thrives in lowland areas up to an altitude of 1,200 meters above sea level. In Indonesia, galangal is often found growing wild in teak forests or in thickets.
