Some of the countries with significant oil and gas buyers include China, the US, India, South Korea, Japan, and many others. These countries have limited or no domestic oil and gas production and hence, they rely heavily on imports to meet their energy needs.
Some of the reasons for the being the largest crude oil importers are as follows:
- The mentioned countries are some of the world's largest consumers of primary energy and the major source for their energy is oil and gas. China used about 4,077.6 MT of primary energy in 2023.
- The increase in industrial demand is one of the major reasons for the crude oil imports. For instance, Vietnam's industry accounted for 58% of total energy usage in 2023.
- There are limited domestic resources. So, they rely completely on oil and gas imports to support their advanced economic sectors. South Korea and Japan are the countries which majorly face this issue.
