HMS 1 & 2 scrap refers to Heavy Melting Steel scrap, a classification of steel scrap widely used in steelmaking and foundries. It includes steel that is suitable for remelting in electric arc furnaces or induction furnaces
Heavy melting steel HMS or heavy melting scrap is broken up into two major categories HMS 1 and HMS 2 where HMS 1 does not contain galvanized and blackened steel whereas HMS 2 does HMS is typically traded as a blend of 1 and 2 either a premium blend 8020 or lower grade mixes 7030 and 6040 For example HMS 1 and 2 8020 should consist of HMS 1 and 2 in the ratio of 80 HMS 1 and 20 HMS 2
Each grade guarantees a minimum piece thickness at least 14 inch 63 mm for HMS 1 and 18 in for HMS 2
HMS 1 and 2 specifications as defined by ISRI North Americas Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries
ISRI SPEC 200 HMS 1 Wrought iron andor steel scrap 14 inch and larger in thickness All pieces must be smaller than 6024 in
ISRI SPEC 201 HMS 1 Same as ISRI 200 except pieces must be smaller than 3618 in
ISRI SPEC 202 HMS 1 Same as ISRI 200 except pieces must be smaller than 6018 in
ISRI SPEC 203 HMS 2 Wrought iron andor steel scrap black and galvanized 18 inch and larger in thickness
ISRI SPEC 204 HMS 2 Same as ISRI 203 except pieces must be smaller than 3618 in
ISRI SPEC 205 HMS 2 Same as ISRI 204 except it may contain automotive scrap except for thin guage material
ISRI SPEC 206 HMS 2 Same as ISRI 205 except pieces must be smaller than 6018 in
Heavy Melting Steel (HMS):
Heavy melting steel is a designation for recyclable steel. It is categorised into two major categories: HMS 1 and HMS 2. The difference between the two is HMS 1 does not contain galvanized and cast iron, whereas HMS 2 does. Because both grades guarantee a minimum piece thickness â?? at least 1/4inch (6.3mm) for HMS 1, and 1/8 in for HMS 2 â?? consignments have a high density.
The typical constituents are plates, truck parts, structural items, large machinery parts, automatic parts, pipes, post consumer steel goods.

HMS 2 (Heavy Melting Scrap 2) Ferrous Scrap for Steel Recycling
Our HMS 2 (Heavy Melting Scrap 2) is a ferrous scrap grade composed of lighter gauge steel materials compared to HMS 1, typically with a thickness below 6 mm. It is suitable for use in steel manufacturing processes, particularly in electric arc furnaces (EAF) and foundries.
This grade is sorted to minimize impurities and non-ferrous contaminants, ensuring reliable melting performance. HMS 2 is commonly used as a cost-effective raw material in the production of steel products for construction, fabrication, and industrial applications.
Key Features:
Ferrous scrap with lighter gauge steel (typically < 6 mm thickness)
Cleaned and sorted to reduce impurities
Free from excessive non-metallic and hazardous materials
Suitable for steel melting in EAF and induction furnaces
Cost-effective raw material for steel production
Consistent quality for industrial processing
Available in bulk quantities for wholesale and export use
Properly handled to meet industry requirements
