Monel R-405 alloy (UNS N04405) increases the sulfur content in the Monel 400 composition to enhance the machinability and become a free-cutting Monel alloy. Alloy 405 is an easy-to-machine version of Alloy 400. Alloy 405 adds a certain amount of sulfur, and the sulfide produced has chip breaking effect during machining, so it is suitable for automatic nut machine. Like Alloy 400, Alloy 405 is resistant to corrosion by seawater, steam, and alkaline solutions at elevated temperatures. Alloy 405 is a solid solution alloy that can only be hardened by cold working. This nickel-based alloy also exhibits good corrosion resistance, weldability and high strength. The alloy exhibits low corrosion rates in fast-flowing brine and seawater environments and is well resistant to stress corrosion cracking in freshwater environments.
